Summary/Objective

The Intern position with the City of Manhattan offers an advanced and unique learning and leadership experience in municipal government. The position works on and assists in completing duties and projects across a variety of departments within the City, including Administration, Finance, Public Works, Community Development, Human Resources, Parks and Recreation, Legal, Airport and Fire Department. The goal of the position is to offer a comprehensive perspective of local government management through participation and mentorship. The chosen Intern must be willing to commit up to at least 80 hours of work over the duration of the internship.

Essential Functions
  • Researches, compiles, and analyzes data, policies, and proposals.
  • Researches and prepares statistical reports, requests for proposals, policies, department projects, cost estimates, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Assists with preparation of materials and presentations for meetings.
  • Assists with preparation, review and monitoring of grants and grant proposals for projects.
  • Provides support to the City and its various committees, commissions and boards.
  • Attends and participates in a variety of coalition meetings composed of elected officials, staff members and community members from the City of Manhattan and surrounding municipalities.
  • Assists in preparation of the annual budget and annual audit/financial report, including identifying needed supplies, materials and staffing. Monitors budget activity and makes various content updates to related documents.
  • Works with the Accounts Payable team to streamline the Capital Asset reporting process.
  • Assists with various processes which include but is not limited to; preparation of bank reconciliations, month end closing, analysis of financial reports, special projects/initiatives and updating websites.
Other Duties
  • Maintains open communication with leadership on all aspects of assigned projects.
  • Effectively interacts and works cooperatively with supervisors, fellow staff members, members of the community, and elected/appointed officials.
  • Attends professional training and job-related seminars, courses, meetings as part of job duties and educational requirements.
  • Reads and interprets State Statutes and local codes and ordinances.
  • Drafts ordinances and resolutions, as needed. • Maintains compliance with all government regulations and standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Required Education and Experience
  • Current enrollment in college or graduate school.
  • Valid driver's license.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Intern must be a graduate student in the MPA program,

  • Knowledge of or experience in Accounting/Finance.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong oral and written skills.
  • Organizational skills necessary to coordinate multiple tasks.
