Construction Safety Manager - Job Responsibilities and Requirements
Responsibilities:
Conduct construction site safety audits to identify improper procedures, inspect equipment and facilities for hazardous conditions, and recommend corrective actions.
Monitor policies, procedures, programs, standards, and design criteria affecting construction safety across multiple projects.
Investigate complaints and on-site construction accidents to determine root causes and recommend effective hazard controls.
Perform noise, ventilation, and gas testing at construction sites to assess potential employee exposure to unhealthy conditions and provide recommendations.
Deliver construction safety and standard reporting procedure training for Project Managers and on-site personnel.
Collect and analyze injury, claim, and safety survey data to prepare technical reports and present contractor performance insights to management and contractors.
Coordinate construction safety activities, including project site audits, and participate in pre-bid and post-award contract meetings as part of the Owner Controlled Insurance Program (OCIP) team.
Review contractor-submitted Injury Illness and Prevention Programs (IIPPs) for accuracy and compliance with safety standards.
Train, assign tasks, and oversee the work of lower-level personnel, ensuring reports are complete and accurate.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
Experience:
~ At least ten years of full-time professional experience in construction safety management, specifically in developing and implementing accident prevention programs for large private or public organizations.
Education:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in industrial or environmental engineering, occupational safety, industrial hygiene, or a closely related field.
OR
A Professional Safety Certification from a recognized institution.
OR
Two years of college education combined with a Professional Safety Certification and an additional two years of full-time professional experience in construction safety management to compensate for the remaining education requirement.
Preferred Qualifications:
Completion of OSHA 500 and a 40-hour HAZPOWER course.
One or more of the following credentials:
Professional Safety Certification from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP).
Licensed Safety Professional (LSP) from the National Association of Safety Professionals (NASP).
Certified Safety Manager (CSM) from NASP.
Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).
