Job Title: Safety Manager (Individual Contributor)

Location: Columbus, OH

Job Type: Full time

Reports To: Director of Safety

Job Summary

We are looking for a dedicated and proactive Safety Specialist to join our team! This role is responsible for developing, implementing, and enforcing safety programs to ensure a safe and compliant workplace. The ideal candidate will have strong investigative skills, a deep knowledge of OSHA regulations, and the ability to train and mentor employees in best safety practices.

Key Responsibilities

Incident Investigation & Prevention

  • Draft and distribute companywide Safety Communications.
  • Investigate safety incidents and partner with leadership to determine root causes and corrective actions.
  • Analyze accidents and near misses to identify trends and implement continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Work closely with Plant Managers and leadership to mitigate safety risks and enforce corrective measures.

Communication & Reporting

  • Promote safety awareness through newsletters, internal communications, and training programs.
  • Develop and present safety-related training materials, reports, and presentations.
  • Submit monthly safety reports to management and plant leadership.
  • Maintain and manage safety training records.
  • Research and provide safety topics for meetings, supporting leadership in safety discussions.
  • Track and document safety issues and resolutions.

Compliance & Audits

  • Conduct audits of safety programs, procedures, and manuals to ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, and EPA regulations.
  • Maintain and enhance safety programs, including Injury Illness Prevention, Hazard Identification, and OSHA-mandated policies.
  • Manage Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and establish PPE guidelines based on risk assessments.

Workplace Safety & Monitoring

  • Identify and address unsafe conditions proactively, providing coaching and mentorship to reduce risks.
  • Serve as an advisor to leadership on risk identification and mitigation strategies.
  • Conduct walk-through safety inspections with Plant and Area Managers, documenting and tracking findings.

Job Safety Analysis (JSA)

  • Conduct periodic JSAs, including assessments for new equipment and processes.
  • Develop job-specific safety plans for supervisors and management, ensuring OSHA and EAP compliance.

Policy Implementation & Enforcement

  • Interpret, clarify, and enforce company safety policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and maintain safety policies, accident/incident investigation protocols, and OSHA recordkeeping procedures.
  • Oversee PPE selection, testing, and implementation.

Training & Development

  • Lead Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) training and ensure compliance through observations and audits.
  • Maintain and improve safety training documentation and records.
  • Conduct new hire orientations and external safety orientations.
  • Provide day and night shift training as needed.

Qualifications & Requirements

Experience:

  • Strong knowledge of OSHA guidelines and best safety practices.
  • Experience in policy development and safety reporting.
  • Hands-on experience with incident investigation and compliance audits.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to develop and present training materials effectively.

Soft Skills:

  • Excellent verbal, written, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments.

Preferred:

  • Bilingual in Spanish/English (a plus, but not required).

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to walk, stand, and conduct safety inspections across facility areas.
  • Occasionally lift up to 15-20 pounds.
