Classification Description Summary

Under general supervision, is responsible for supervisory police work of average difficulty, commanding or assisting in the command of a team or unit; and performs related work as required.

Essential Functions

Establishes, communicates and supports the Department's vision, goals, guiding principles and core values while creating long term sustainability.

Provides support to executive leadership and participate as an integral member of command staff.

Remains engaged and informed on current organizational and community matters.

Oversees the operation of shift, section, division or unit of the police department.

Ensures policy and procedures are followed while analyzing and recommending procedural/policy revisions.

Emphasizes teamwork. Facilitates a positive intra-departmental relationship with all Divisions within the Reno Police Department and promotes communication.

Promotes and develops collaboration and working relationships with other city departments and other agencies.

Promotes problem-solving efforts based on Intelligence-Led Policing and Community Oriented Policing strategies which reduce and prevent crime.

Makes field observations, monitors performance and, if needed, assumes command of police activities at the scene of major crimes or emergencies.

Creates enthusiasm while encouraging innovation and problem solving efforts, allowing employees to work together toward a common goal.

Ensures employees have the resources needed to accomplish their goals.

Mentors and trains subordinates for continued development within the organization

Practices effective communications with community stakeholders.

Ensures regular inspections of equipment are completed.

Evaluates performance of assigned employees.

Identifies and addresses risk management incidents and fiscal accountability.

Performs collateral duties as assigned.

Interprets departmental rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

Practices effective communications with the media.

Monitors budget, impacts to budget and assists in budget preparation.

Performs additional duties and/or take on additional responsibilities as assigned.

Serves as a member or advisor to departmental or community boards as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

Approved principles, practices and procedures of police work.

Pertinent federal, state and county laws and city ordinances, including the rules of evidence.

Geography of the city and the location of important buildings.

The rules and regulations of the police department.

The modern methods and practices of traffic safety and accident investigation.

Ability to:

Command the respect of subordinates and to assign, direct and supervise their work.

Analyze complex police problems and situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances.

Deal with the public courteously and firmly and to establish and maintain satisfactory public relations.

Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education/Training:

+ Possess an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university with college level coursework in criminal justice, business administration, public administration, or a related field to the position.

OR

+ Have completed 60 college credits from an accredited college or university with college level coursework in criminal justice, business administration, public administration, or a related field to the position.

OR

+ Possess a Nevada Peace Officers' Standards and Training (POST) Advanced Certificate

OR

+ A Nevada Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Supervisor Certificate - Preferred.

Experience:

Three consecutive years as a current Police Sergeant in the Reno Police Department.

License, Certificate, Special Requirements:

Possession and maintenance of a valid Nevada driver's license.
