Posting Details Position Information Job Title Herpetology Research Assistant Department Biology Essential Functions Glacier Creek Preserve, managed by the Department of Biology at UNO, is seeking one individual to assist with the Long-term Herpetological Study. Once trained, the successful candidate will work independently to perform indoor data entry and outdoor field data collection. Specific duties will include: 1) Walking through tallgrass, woodland, and agricultural fields to access sample sites, 2) Lifting artificial cover objects (plywood and metal) to capture reptiles and amphibians, 3) Handling, measuring, and marking snakes according to protocol, 4) Recording field data, 5) Collecting weather data using a Kestrel, 6) GPS data collection, 7) Formatting and downloading temperature sensor data, 8) Carrying field supplies, and 9) Data entry into an excel database. The work site is at UNO's Glacier Creek Preserve, located at 14810 State Street, Bennington NE, 68007 Work Schedule Up to 16 hours/week; A flexible schedule is required. This could include hours between 6:00am and 11:00pm on weekdays and weekends to meet the research requirements for snake surveys. Additional Duties Required Qualifications Must be comfortable handling and measuring snakes. Comfortable working in an outdoor environment where there is exposure to mosquitos and other insects, tall vegetation, sun, wind and seasonally hot or cold temperatures. Applicants must be willing and able to learn to use data collection tools to collect detailed animal and environmental measurements. The ability to record legible handwritten notes is a must. Willing and able to work independently after training. Applicants must be willing and able to complete online IACUC (Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee) training. Preferred Qualifications Outdoor environmental and/or animal data collection and survey experience is preferred. Some exposure or experience handling reptiles, birds or mammals in a native habitat setting. Trustworthy, punctual, and reliable.
