About the Opportunity
The WMed Department of Pathology is searching for its next Chair, as the Founding Chair has accepted the role of Dean at her alma mater.
The department is made up of faculty and staff who are dedicated to teaching, service, and research. In our forensic pathology focus, we strive to provide high quality death investigation that meets the national standards. Our efforts include a commitment to the public health and safety of the communities we serve, from rural towns to cities.
The new Chair will oversee the Medical Examiner's Office, the Division of Neuropathology, the Research Histology Lab, and Research.
We're looking for candidates who are driven, collaborative leaders with strong academic and research backgrounds. A visionary mindset is a must.
Candidates must be board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, and have an M.D., D.O., M.D./Ph.D., or equivalent degree. They also need to meet the qualifications for a medical school faculty appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor level.
While forensic experience is helpful, it's not required.
Our forensic pathology research is focused on the pathology of trauma and diseases resulting in sudden and unexpected deaths. As a part of our commitment to forensic pathology, we serve as the Office of the Medical Examiner for multiple counties in Michigan.
The forensic anthropologists provide significant support by not only assisting with case analysis but responding to requests by law enforcement to assist with complex death scenes in Michigan and Indiana.
Our Division of Neuropathology is a national referral site for the diagnostic interpretation of autopsy brains and biopsy specimens, as well as a research center dedicated to scientific investigation of causes and consequences of diseases of the human nervous system. All of our faculty participate in the pathology education of medical students through an integrated approach in the classroom and through elective opportunities.
The toxicology laboratory within the Department of Pathology at WMed was established to conduct research and develop analytical techniques to qualitatively identify and quantify substances in clinical specimens that have adverse effects. Additionally, the toxicology laboratory is a part of the forensic team that includes forensic pathology, forensic anthropology, and histopathology.
Limited access to laboratories capable of performing testing for classic and novel toxicological substances in a clinically relevant timeframe is an impediment to providing high quality, patient-centered medical care in many medical communities, and the Department of Pathology at WMed is proud to meet the clinical needs of WMed Health and other healthcare providers.
