Water First is a Canadian charity that partners with Indigenous communities across Canada to help address the water crisis through education, training, and meaningful collaboration.

We seek an Alberta Drinking Water Curriculum Adaptation Coordinator who will report to the Senior Manager, Instructional Design and Development.

Water First aims to expand the Drinking Water Internship program nationwide. While water treatment processes are generally standardized, regulations and certification requirements vary across provinces and territories. To ensure participants can achieve their provincial certification upon completing the program, the Ontario Drinking Water Internship must be adapted and tailored to meet the specific requirements of each region. The Alberta Drinking Water Curriculum Adaptation Coordinator will assist with the program adaptation from an Alberta context.

Start Date : February 2025

Wage : $68,000 - $70,000 per annum (Some flexibility based on the level of experience)

The Alberta Drinking Water Curriculum Adaptation Coordinators accountabilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Work closely with management, subject matter experts, external stakeholders, and the instructional design team to assess needs, build specific learning objectives, develop comprehensive training overview plans, and contribute towards program adaptations (provincial adaptations and internship model adaptations).
  • Identify all the certification requirements for an Alberta Water Operator, as well as the province-specific process for becoming certified, through research and engagement with external bodies, including:
  • In plant hours
  • Continuing Education Units (CEUs)
  • Exam process and registration
  • On-the-job training
  • Entry level course
  • Career progression Operator in Training
  • Education/high school
  • Audit current drinking water materials to determine where adaptations will be required and implement adaptations as needed, including tracking adaptations along the process:
    • Regulatory requirements in drinking water
    • Geographic differences (GIS and enviro work)
  • Identify and develop new courses as needed
  • Assist with integrating the latest research in adult and Indigenous education into programming
  • Assist in the migration of Drinking Water Internship training materials to our learning management system (LMS)
  • Follow established design and delivery processes, ensure design conventions are maintained, and adhere to Water First branding
  • Identify pre-existing training bodies and resources within the province and explore the potential for collaboration
  • Research the process for having courses recognized for CEUs

The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following:

  • Post-secondary diploma or bachelors degree in education or science-based program
  • Adult education, curriculum development, or instructional design training
  • Demonstrated 2+ years of related work experience in designing, developing, and delivering hands-on, experiential, and applied skills-based technical/scientific educational programs for an adult audience (or equivalent combination of transferable experience and education)
  • Demonstrated experience in learning program design across a variety of delivery mediums and content types (face-to-face, outdoors, e-learning, video, virtual learning), as seen through a portfolio of work
  • Experience with water treatment
  • Comfortable engaging with external organizations (course providers, provincial certification bodies, etc.).
  • An overall proven ability to develop stem-based learning
  • Must have the ability to work in an ever-changing, project-driven environment with a strong design sensibility when creating all instructional materials
  • A flexible team player with demonstrated ability to collaborate and support colleagues, comfortable working independently with little direction under tight deadlines
  • Evidence of professionalism, judgment, initiative, tact, discretion, diplomacy, and creativity
  • Strong time management skills needing minimal supervision
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written
  • Regular access to a vehicle & willingness to travel to northern Indigenous communities approximately 15% of the time
  • Class G Ontario drivers license or other provincial equivalent with a clean driving record
  • Ability to work effectively from home and on the road
  • Strong cultural sensitivity and awareness
  • Strong editing and proofreading skills with a meticulous eye for detail
  • Advanced experience using MS Office and Google Suite applications
  • A willingness to continually expand ones professional skill set, learn on the job, take on additional responsibilities as required and respond to and thrive in a dynamic work environment
  • Candidates must have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada under relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
  • A vulnerable sector security check is required as part of the hiring process

  • A masters degree in education or a science-based program
  • Certification in water science, chemistry, and/or mathematics
  • Previous experience working with Indigenous communities
  • LMS (Learn Upon) and Articulate experience
